Building is the smallest part of living place of citizens living and working in the city. As in historical Iran as well as in developed countries, livability starts from the scale of the buildings and extends to the entire urban body. Over the past 80 years, knowledge and skills of establishing livable settlements have been forgotten in effect of the incomplete copying of the modernization paradigm in the foundation of Iran’s residential centers.
Now it seems that it is the time to reread the indigenous knowledge and skills along with the wisdom and new technologies resulting from life sciences, we can achieve a realizable vision for the livability of cities with creative and innovative methods.
A sustainable building is a building whose design, in addition to being resilient against structural loads and environmental dynamic forces, in the form of the smallest part of the city, is designed to solve urban problems at the scale of urban parcels. Capacity building with the aim of forming a collective working conscience in social and environmental fields, is done by improving the knowledge of builders and it is an important step in accepting social-environmental responsibility at the building scale. Designing a sustainable building in urban management will lead to directing the social and economic capital of the private sector towards the regeneration of the city in the form of a city with sustainable and livable development.
In this regard, Urban Livability Think Tank of has organized a training-capacity building workshop “Effective contribution of builders in managing urban issues with sustainable building design”.
